SKAMANIA
The architecture and landscape can be summed up in one word: elemental. This architectural gem is nestled amidst a smalltown along the Columbia River Gorge with sweeping views across to the Bridge of the Gods and beyond. The entire region has been and continues to be shaped by the extreme weather patterns which emphasizes the raw elemental quality of the exposed rock, large skyscapes, and wind swept plant ecologies.
We took this inspiration and ran with it for our client’s hillside property. We created a pleasant meander from the top of the hill through a series of secluded nodes as it weaves to the bottom of the lower meadow. The nodes will be home to a dynamic gathering patio with fire circle and dining area, vegetable garden terraces, and an amplified entry sequence. The design played off the substantial local basalt retaining walls and stairs already on-site, by bringing on more rust hued local stone on-site for seating, additional retaining, landings, and paths. Additional materials included rough cut juniper lumber for site walls, risers, and large bench seating, and corten steel firewood furnishings.
The first phase of construction is already underway, and we look forward to our clients settling into their new chapter of retired life with a dynamic garden to deepen their connection to their sublime piece of land.
