trumbull

A bona fide Portland homestead. Tucked away in a quiet corner of St Johns, this family home is bursting with personality and ingenuity. Our clients had already lovingly renovated their historic house when they brought us onto the scene, and so we were well queued up with a family that had great design sensibility and vision.

The large double lot interweaves entertaining, relaxing, growing, and play seamlessly. The existing dining terrace connects to a new fire circle framed by dynamic boulder seating and climate adaptive plantings. This entertaining node flows into the new vegetable garden at the focal point of the backyard. Enveloping the backside of the garden, berry bushes and fruit trees craft the threshold into the ‘back 40’. A place that inspires play by celebrating the wildness of the seasonal meadow and it’s series of natural obstacles (stumps, logs and boulders). A mowed path meandering through the meadow will eventually lead you to the tiny home/remote office nestled into the amplified native forest planting. Ecotones a plenty!

Still under a year post-construction, this landscape has already made an imprint on the family’s outdoor experience, and we cannot wait to see the garden continue to evolve and flourish as the family grows.
